Because of their importance in terms of economy through contribution to animal production, environment preservation, structuration of landscapes, cultural issues (animal product quality, landscape), grasslands are at the focus point of several stakeholders, benefit from public policies and must meet a range of societal demands. Before reviewing these issues, it is very important to briefly analyse the history of grasslands in Europe.
