Pedra ATALAYA – Animal management

Description
Practice abstract
Monte do Tojal covers around 500 hectares of its own property, plus approximately 1500 rented hectares. They have around 800 crossbreed-limousin suckler cows. Most of the area is used for dry farming, but there is a 30-hectare irrigated plot where they implement conservation agriculture practices. This area has its own pivot and dam, although its capacity depends entirely on rainfall, as it is not a collective irrigation system with water guarantee. In the remaining areas, where pastures for hay production predominate, combining conservation agriculture, with lower productivities, with grazing cows is very hard, especially in the winter. In addition to agricultural activities, they have diversified the sources of income. Part of it is allocated to tourism, with areas available to rent for parties and events. The farm also includes a hunting component, with an area of approximately 130 hectares.
