Use of clover scoring on Pasturebase Ireland application
Description
Practice abstract
PastureBase Ireland (PBI) is a free decision support tool for grassland farmers. It has a range of tools available to farmers to assist in short, medium and long-term farm management decisions. With the rising incorporation of clover on farm it is important that farmers are enabled with knowledge to make decisions on farm. Clover scoring has been incorporated as a decision support tool on PBI. This allows farmers to account for their clover percent on farm and they can make decisions to reduce chemical nitrogen if there is an adequate clover content (between 20-40%) on their paddocks.
Mark Bateman runs a dairy farm in Warrenscourt, Co. Cork. He has implemented clover on farm and utilises the clover scoring app and it helps him to make decisions on whether to reduce chemical nitrogen on his grazing swards. Overall, Mark has reduced his reliance on chemical nitrogen by measuring the clover content on his farm and reducing chemical nitrogen on his clover paddocks with a content over 20%.
