Extending the grazing season length
Description
Practice abstract
Killian Brennan farms in Kilcogy, Co. Cavan with his wife Madeline and their 3 children. The Brennan’s farm on a 34ha milking platform with 113 cows and have a 20ha support out block and all their young stock are contract reared. The farm has put an emphasis on improving soil fertility and incorporating clover over the last 10 years. White clover for the grazing paddocks and red clover for the silage paddocks is included in the reseeding programme on the farm. They have also spent money on upgrading and putting in cambered roadways to improve access to paddocks. They have also included astroturf on high volume areas of the roadways to improve cow flow and help reduce lameness. There are multiple access points to every part of the paddock and this has allowed the cows to have increased days at grass on their farm.
