Description
Practice abstract
Herdade de São Luís is a 700-hectare family farm located in Montemor-o-Novo. They have adopted an agro-silvopastoral system, integrating cows, pigs, sheep and goats. The aim is to balance species in order to reduce costs, take advantage of natural resources and eliminate machinery and pesticides. Over the last seven years, innovative grazing management has brought greater productivity, reduced costs and improved animal welfare through the implementation of parks with optimal characteristics for animals. Permanent pastures were sown, improving the availability and quality of feed. Through these parks, animal welfare is also ensured, because the animals have space, water, food and shade, and at the same time the health of the soil is protected due to the size and rotation of the plots. In the last five years, the farm has also diversified its commercial activities, focusing on selling meat directly to the end consumer, with fewer animals and less variety of species.
