Description
Practice abstract
The organic farm Herdade da Carneira is located on the northern slopes of the Serra d’Ossa, near Rio de Moinhos, in the interior South of Portugal. The property has 500 Black Merino sheep and covers 180 hectares, divided into 50 hectares of Eucalyptus groves, 25 hectares of arable land and 90 hectares of cork oak Montado. In addition, 7 hectares of high-density olive grove of the Lecciana variety have been planted.
This farm has a great advantage due to the fact that it has two relatively large water basins, which offer an excellent water supply to the property, serving as a reinforcement for the irrigation of fodder and the high-density olive grove.
In recent years, there has been a greater focus on implementing practices that are beneficial for the Montado and for climate change adaptation. Those that stand out within the scope of the project are the reduction in the density of cork oaks and their phytosanitary assessment, with a careful selection of trees taking into account their diseases and health conditions, and the improvement of meadows with a mixture of clover and grasses to improve the soil and the health of the Montado mixed farming system.
