Description
Practice abstract
This farm has an area of approximately 1000 hectares, and the diversity of activities is surprising. More than half of the area is dedicated to the agrosilvopastoral system, the montado, a typical Portuguese forest. The remaining is occupied by a traditional olive grove, some of which is densely planted, and annual crops (cereals and protein crops) that alternate between grasses and legumes, always with the inclusion of animals. Animal management is an integral part of the agricultural approach adopted on this farm. The aim is to promote a symbiosis between plant and animal production. Contrary to a segregated vision, here animals are seen as essential elements of the agricultural dynamic. Regarding the innovations made in recent years, the strategy involves the optimization of three components: profit crops, the implementation of cover crops and the integration of animals into the rotation cycle, through holistic management and controlled management. In addition, the farm is involved in several research projects, both at the European and national level. One of the highlights is the development of high-quality composting. This approach involves creating a compost stratum, which is then extracted in water and injected directly into the soil. This practice is particularly beneficial given the compaction of local soils. By promoting soil health through the introduction of beneficial bacteria and fungi, the farm aims to revitalize the ecosystem.
